Largemouth bass and spotted bass are the main draw for anglers. Largemouth bass growth has been excellent, and they are very plump. Largemouth bass are abundant and well represented in the 12-18 inch range. Spotted bass are also abundant with many spots in the 14-21 inch range, representing some of the best values in the state. In fact the spotted bass numbers in the 17-20 inch range equaled the highest value ever recorded from the lake. Spotted bass growth has been good to excellent, and their condition is outstanding.
Crappie fishing is excellent and should continue to be good in the fall of 2006 and during 2007 as the 2004 year-class continues to grow. The best times to crappie fish are generally in early spring and fall. Remember, Logan Martin Lake has a 9-inch minimum length limit on crappie.
Striped, white and hybrid bass make annual spring runs upriver and have created quite a fishery at the headwaters (below Neely Henry dam). Fishing starts to pick up in March and can continue through the summer for stripes and hybrids when the power company generates water. Stripes and hybrids can also be found in spring fed creeks and cold-water springs located throughout the lake during summer months. Some of the better creeks for striper fishing are Ohatchee and Choccolocco Creeks. The striped bass fishery fluctuates depending upon 1) reproduction and migration of striped bass down the Coosa from Weiss Reservoir and 2) stocking success into Logan Martin. Striped bass and hybrid striped bass will continue to be stocked at three to five fish per acre each year.
