Over 40 years and this lake, only 30 miles from Birmingham, is still producing great catches of Coosa River Spotted Bass and largemouth bass. Like other lakes, it does receive loads of fishing pressure during the Spring and Summer seasons. But as Fall progresses Logan Martin Lake shows less anglers and more chances of having many places all to yourself.

Like upper Coosa River Lakes Weiss Lake and Neely Henry Lake, this lake is dropped for Winter pool. It will be down until April. In years past it is often down 4-5 feet. Navigation is hazardous so extreme caution is advised when traveling anywhere on this lake out of the main river channel. As for the fishing its either bass species or stripers to target.

Spotted bass are governed to feed by moving water. This means places like main lake points, the mouths of creeks, around islands and along irregular banks, can provide places to search out the spotted bass, usually relating to the current edge. The current found in the backs of creeks is also a good place to find spotted bass, along with striped bass and largemouth bass as well. Low water shows some creeks still have depths over 10 feet deep with low water.

Largemouth bass can be found around piers, boathouses and bass tournament release sites such as around marinas. There is a good chance that you will catch your biggest bass this Fall and early Winter period, while fishing Logan Martin Lake.

Records show they are fooled with spinnerbaits, small and large worms and lizards both Texas rigged and Carolina rigged, jig combos, deep diving crankbaits, lures like Bill Lewis rattletraps and Cordell rattling spots, both floating and suspending jerkbaits and loads of lures fished on bottom. Even topwater lures and small finesse lures can fool these picky feeding bass in Fall and early Winter.

With heavy Fall and Winter rains the lake can be muddy, especially from Interstate 20 crossing at midlake, to the lakes headwaters and on up in the backs of major feeder creeks. Following several days of rain the lakes lower end is the best place to find the clearest water.
